Dear Southern Boone School District Families,

As we head into the final weeks of the school year, it’s a great time to pause and recognize all that has been accomplished across our district. From the classroom to extracurricular activities, our students have continued to grow, achieve and represent Southern Boone in ways that make us all proud.

The weeks ahead are some of the busiest—and most meaningful—of the year. We look forward to celebrating academic milestones, performances, competitions and graduation. These moments highlight not only student success, but also the strong support system provided by our families, staff and community.

I want to commend our students for their hard work and commitment throughout the year. Whether they are finishing strong in the classroom, stepping into leadership roles or giving back through service, they continue to set a high standard for what it means to be a Southern Boone Eagle.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for the trust you place in our schools each day. Your support plays a vital role in helping our students succeed and our district move forward.

We look forward to finishing the year strong and celebrating all that has been achieved together.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and school district!

Yours in Education,

Dr. Tim Roth
School Superintendent

Change to Last Day of School for 2025–2026 School Year

The Southern Boone Board of Education approved a change to the 2025–2026 school calendar during its April 13 meeting, moving the last day of school to Wednesday, May 20th, 2026. Students will be dismissed early at 2 p.m. on the final day.

The adjustment comes after a mild winter that resulted in unused snow days being built into the district calendar. Even with the revised end date, the district will continue to meet the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requirement of 1,044 instructional hours.

The calendar change also supports a busy summer of construction and facility improvement projects at Southern Boone High School. Planned work includes Phase 1 of a new HVAC system funded through the April 2024 bond issue, which will require significant access to classrooms and hallways.

Additional summer projects at the high school include continued construction of the new vocational and agriculture wing, replacement of gravel areas near the baseball and softball fields with concrete, and potential parking lot improvements near the outdoor stadium.

With multiple projects scheduled and a limited summer timeline, the earlier end to the school year will allow staff additional time to prepare classrooms and provide contractors the opportunity to begin work as soon as possible.

Update on District Finances and State Funding Challenges

Southern Boone School District is preparing for potential budget challenges due to ongoing uncertainty in state funding.

Projections show a decrease of approximately $360,000 in state funding for the 2025–2026 school year and an estimated $760,000 reduction for 2026–2027. Additional impacts include reduced local revenue growth due to the Boone County Senior Real Estate Tax Relief Program.

While the district remains financially stable, leaders are taking a proactive approach by carefully managing staffing, evaluating class sizes, prioritizing essential spending and exploring cost-saving strategies.

The district remains committed to maintaining high-quality education while planning responsibly and keeping the community informed as more information becomes available.

Voters Approve $4 Million No-Tax-Rate Increase Bond Issue

Southern Boone voters approved a $4 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue during the April 7, 2026 election, with nearly 77% voting in favor. The measure will support key facility improvements across the district, including parking lot upgrades, roof repairs and Phase 2 of HVAC improvements at the high school.

Projects will address aging infrastructure, with many parking lots, roof sections and HVAC systems now more than 20 years old and used daily by students, staff and the community. Planned work includes converting and resurfacing parking lots at multiple campuses, repairing sections of roofs at the primary and high school, and continuing HVAC system upgrades to improve efficiency and comfort.

The district’s debt service tax levy will remain unchanged at $1.7423 per $100 of assessed valuation. Work is expected to begin this summer, starting with improvements to the high school parking lot near the outdoor stadium, as the district continues its focus on maintaining safe, functional and well-maintained facilities.

Spring 2026 Walking School Bus Program
Friday, May 1st, 2026 to Wednesday, May 20th, 2026

We are happy to invite your family to join the Walking School Bus program and we look forward to walking your child/children to school. A Walking School Bus (WSB) is a group of children who walk to school together under the supervision of adult leaders (e.g. a parent/grandparent or community member). The program promotes good health, a cleaner environment, reduced traffic around school, and a ready-to-learn attitude for the school day. Daycares are welcome to join us. We meet at the Public Library parking lot each morning.     Supervision begins at 7:20 AM and our walk begins at 7:30 AM.  Kids can arrive any time between 7:20 AM and 7:30 AM.

Register the first day your child walks. We need parent/guardian contact information for every child. Children can always join us along the route if we pass by your house. Kids can join the Walking School Bus any time throughout the program. Come when the walk fits your schedule. This goes for kids and adult volunteers; we are a flexible group.

Always look for adult volunteers with yellow Walking School Bus backpacks before leaving your child at the “bus stop.”

Your WSB Team will operate every morning (weather permitting). Rain and/or lightning will cancel the walk. Threats of severe weather cancel the walk.

If you are late, but can see us walking, your child can join us. We don’t walk at lightning speed.

Send a water bottle with your child if it is hot outside.

Photographs of the children may be used in promotional materials

Parents/grandparents are always welcome to join us. Adults have as much fun as the kids!

To be a WSB adult volunteer walker or for more information, please contact Joan Seidel at jseidelpetralia@gmail.com.

Contact Joan Seidel at jseidelpetralia@gmail.com if you are interested in forming a Walking School Bus route in your neighborhood or if you have questions about the program.  We will be happy to help your kids walk to school.
