Dear Southern Boone School District Families,

As we move through March, our schools continue to be filled with meaningful learning each day. Across the district, students are engaged in classroom lessons, hands-on projects, and activities that help them grow both academically and personally. This important work is made possible by the dedication of our teachers and staff who support and inspire students every day.

One important item for our community is the $4 million no-tax-rate increase bond issue that will appear on the April 7, 2026 election ballot. If approved by voters, the bond would fund improvements to parking lots, roof repairs, and HVAC system upgrades across the district. These projects focus on maintaining and improving the facilities we already have while keeping the current tax rate the same.

Community members who would like to learn more are invited to attend one of two informational presentations on March 10 or March 31 at 6 p.m. in the Central Office Boardroom. Additional information is below in this e-newsletter and available at sbschools.us/future.

Our community will also have an opportunity to hear from local candidates during the Southern Boone Candidate Forum on Monday, March 30th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Office Boardroom. The forum will include candidates for the City of Ashland’s mayor and board of aldermen, followed by candidates for the Southern Boone Board of Education. Community members may attend in person or watch the livestream at sbschools.us/forum. The event is sponsored by the Southern Boone County Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Boone Economic Development Council.

In addition, the Southern Boone Eagle Foundation is currently accepting nominations for several awards that recognize individuals who have made a lasting impact on our schools and community. Awards include the Distinguished Alumni Award, Distinguished Educator Award, Eagle Elite Award, and Friend of Education Award. The nomination deadline is March 9th, and award recipients will be recognized at the Golden Eagle Club Spring Dinner and Awards Ceremony on April 14th. Nomination forms and additional information are available at sbschools.us/awards.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and school district!

Yours in Education,

Dr. Tim Roth
School Superintendent

Southern Boone to Place $4 Million No-Tax-Rate Increase Bond Issue on April 7 Ballot

Voters in the Southern Boone County R-1 School District will consider a $4 million no-tax-rate increase bond issue in the April 7, 2026, election.

The bond issue would fund improvements, renovations, repairs, furnishing and equipping of school facilities, including parking lot improvements, roof replacements and HVAC upgrades at multiple district buildings and school campuses.

If approved by voters, the district’s debt service property tax levy will remain at the current rate of $1.7423 per $100 of assessed valuation.

District officials said previous bond issues focused on expanding school facilities to address enrollment growth. The current proposal centers on maintaining and improving existing buildings and campuses.

If approved, the project would include:

Parking Lots Improvements
- Upgrade a portion of the high school parking lot near the outdoor stadium and city park with concrete
- Convert the primary school parking lots to concrete surfaces
- Resurface the elementary school parking lot and bus loop with new asphalt
- Upgrade the remaining asphalt areas of the middle school north parking lot to concrete

Roof Repairs|
- Address sections of the primary school roof
- Improve a portion of the high school roof

HVAC Upgrades
- Phase 2 of replacing the HVAC system at the high school

The parking lots, roof areas and HVAC system included in the proposed projects are all more than 20 years old and serve school buildings and campuses across the district.

Community Presentations
The school district will host two community presentations on the April 2026 bond issue on Tuesday, March 10th, and Tuesday, March 31st, at 6 p.m. each evening in the central office boardroom. Information about the bond proposal, project details and election timeline will be presented, and community members will have an opportunity to ask questions.

The bond proposal was developed following several months of discussion by the Board of Education, district administration, school staff and the district’s facilities committee.

2026-2027 District Calendar Approved

The Southern Boone Board of Education approved the district’s 2026–2027 school calendar during its regular monthly meeting on February 17th.

The approved calendar includes 169 student instructional days and exceeds the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) minimum requirement of 1,044 instructional hours. The 2026–2027 calendar provides 1,096.60 total instructional hours and includes six built-in snow days totaling 40.8 hours.

Recent changes to state law provide incentive funding for districts that operate 169 or more student days. Southern Boone has been just two days short of this mark in each of the past two years. Under the proposed calendar, eligible incentive funding—equal to 2% of prior-year state aid—must be used to support teacher salaries or compensation, helping with recruitment and retention.

To reach 169 student days, the calendar converts one April professional development day and one staff flex day into student instructional days, while still including six built-in snow days. Parent-teacher conferences will continue in November and March, with early dismissal on Thursdays and no school on the following Fridays.
